Topanga Autumn, Early Morning Plein Air, part 3

This early November morning I headed down the road to a location nearby: Penny Road. This is one of my favorite morning views of Rochemont Rock. Back lit by the rising sun, this sandstone formation and the surrounding chaparral look very inviting for a plein air painter. Once again it was a Santa Ana condition with very crisp and clear air. This is the time when the morning colors are strong and contrasting. …

PETER STRAUSS RANCH En Plein Air

Allied Artists' members and non-members alike came to Peter Strauss Ranch for en plein air painting on November 14. I had a wonderful time with my friends at this paint-out. Among them were active artist members: pastel artist Bruce Trentham, oil painters Robert Scopinich, Carole Garland, Patty O'Hearn and watercolorist Larry Deeds.

Start like a Butcher and Finish Like a Surgeon

Too often we make the job of painting a picture much more difficult than it needs to be. Mainly because we lack the patience and discipline to establish a good start and jump directly into painting detail way before we ought to. Maybe this is because we think if we can nail down a detail, we can build the rest of the painting around it. There are so many things to consider we feel overwhelmed and think this bit…

Don't Handcuff Yourself!

Trying to be too literal will handcuff your efforts and almost guarantee a poor painting.

This is a very common misstep by outdoor painters. Especially in plein air where the objects you’re painting are right in front of you. Their immediacy almost demands you render them as they are. And, you’re being instructed to carefully observe the subtleties of local color, temperatures, reflected light and intensities. Nonetheless, resist slavishly duplicating your subject or you’re in…

My Plein Air Challenge

Before I head out to paint I set myself a challenge which I write as short notes on my IPhone.  I reread them on site. This week it was  be different in your approach and had to do with the process of laying washes. At the end of the painting I want to feel I tried something new . In this case I did get a softer layer in the background due to the 4 layers of washes .…
