Notes for Advanced Artists

Like many artists, I’ve read a bunch of books, watched a bunch of videos and studied with a bunch of experts. I sometimes found their insights contradictory so, long ago, I decided to organize my notes into one comprehensive outline, specifically so I could compare and contrast the various viewpoints. The notes were to aid my own comprehension, so I typically only took notes that provided some kind of insight that I hadn’t already garnered elsewhere. As a consequence, they’re probably not of much value to the neophyte, but the advanced artist should find them helpful. I’ve posted them online at Keene Wilson Fine Art under the “For Artists” tab. The "Landscape Painting" section should be especially useful for plein air painters. Let me know what you think.

My pleasure, it's a very nice painting and deserves to be featured.

Unfortunately couldn't come to the conference. Going to France in May to paint and just couldn't do both. Perhaps there will be another one and I will be able to attend next time.

After studying art at various Junior colleges, I refined my artistic skills at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and at the Animation Guild under the tutelage of such masters as Glenn Vilppu, Karl Gnass, Nathan Fowkes, Ignat Ignatov, Will Weston and Rey Bustos.  Workshops with Ovanes Berberian, Henry Yan, Steve Huston and Catherine Anderson have also been helpful, but I owe my greatest artistic debt to study with my plein air, colorist mentor Elio Camacho and my impressionist mentor Vadim Zangninian.

I am a retired City Manager, hold two Master’s degrees, neither of which is in art, and am a former Army airborne/ranger/green beret having served with Special Forces in Viet Nam.  My wife, Debra Kurita, is also a former City Manager and is currently helping the City of Bell recover from their recent debacle. I have two sons, Wyatt and Skyler, both of whom enjoy ice hockey.

Extensive Notes on Landscape Painting

Posted on May 13, 2012 at 11:52pm 0 Comments

I have always found it important to first gather knowledge and consult a wide variety of opinion before allowing my own thinking to congeal. So, like many of you, I have diligently studied my craft. Throughout I have taken notes: notes from workshops, notes from classes, notes from books (150+), notes from videos (70+), notes from my plein air, colorist mentor Elio Camacho and notes from my impressionist mentor Vadim Zangninian. Lots of notes. And compiled them into categories primarily…

The Plein Air Converence in Vegas was great. Met lots of like minded people. Here are my notes for those who missed it.

Select California Plein Air Locations

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 11:37pm 3 Comments

For those of you who are interested, I’ve posted 42 California plein air locations with photos and directions on my website ( For Artists/Select California Plein Air Locations). Mostly OC and East Bay where I have lived and painted, but about 10 locations throughout the rest of California as well. It obviously can’t be exhaustive so my goal is to simply provide a list of nice locations that someone unfamiliar with the area would…
