BART A CHARLOW has not received any gifts yet
I consider myself an "amateur" artist in its original sense: someone who pursues art solely out of passion.
Travel - local or international - and being outdoors are my main source of stimulation, and combining painting in many forms with those pursuits ensures that I more fully experience where I am. It allows me to express what I feel and to remember those moments in greater depth.
If my paintings stimulate an experience or inspire you, then that is so much the better!
In "real life" Bart is a nonprofit CEO, a business consultant, and a practicing Family Therapist with work experience in many fields. He lives and has raised his family in Foster City.
Bart is a trained anthropologist and has studied a wide range of human artistic expression from art to architecture, from the paleolithic era to the modern, and spanning diverse cultures across the inhabited continents.
He has been sketching since childhood and is self-trained in many graphic media, including photography (in which he formerly had a business), videography, digital graphics, and more. His background in psychology includes training in visual perception.
Growing up in a family with several artists and master craftsmen was a bit intimidating. He did not begin to paint seriously until his 30s, having pursued photography as his main art form instead. But once he found his way with the brush, he never looked back.
He first learned sumi-e painting, then took up acrylics, his primary medium. He tried oils, but prefers water based media. Today he works in several: acrylics, watercolor, gouache, Ceracolors (water based wax), in addition to pastel, pencil and pen, sometimes mixing them.
Stylistically he is inspired by graphic illustration and woodblock prints (ancient and modern), and even more-so by the Impressionist and Expressionist movements. His personal style is modeled on those forms of expressive realism, rather than photo-realism or abstraction. Subjects range from portraiture and still life to landscapes, with a decided preference for the latter. He paints both from imagination and real life.
Managing the Burlingame Plein Air Painters has encouraged him to get out and paint more often in beautiful surroundings with great company. He urges others to join in the fun.
